The cancer risk women should know before having breast augmentation.

Previously in practice of plastic surgeons, we could inform patients there was no cancer risk associated with breast implants. Now we cannot do that anymore.

This is a very new issue in plastic surgery. Among more than 10 million women worldwide who have received breast implants, there have been 359 case reports of anaplastic large-cell lymphoma (ALCL) collected by US FDA since 2011.

The FDA finding was added to the products' labeling by an added warnings mixed with plethora of complications. So far no implants have been recalled because of this lymphoma. The only F.D.A. advice was that women only to follow their doctor's recommended actions for monitoring their breast implants. But the fact is many doctors had never heard of the disease until earlier this year.

This implant associated lymphoma is, however, curable although with reported deaths.

It is the FDA update in March this year that raises awareness worldwide. So from now on, we can expect see more number of ALCL as many more doctors would report this cancer. Up until now many of both plastic surgeons and non-plastic surgeons, who practice in cosmetic surgery, do not inform their patients about this. Please take care of yourself and consider this before deciding to have breast augmentation.
